Dear GG Adult League Members,
I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the new happenings at GG.
As most of you now know, Terri Wethersett has resigned her position as Director of the Adult Hockey League to become Full time manager at home and spend quality time with her family. With two young children Terri has spent the last several years juggling all of the responsibilities of wife, mother, homework tutor, etc. and Director of the great adult league at GG. Something had to give, especially considering the evening hours demanded by the Adult League. I am sure that you like her fellow associates at GG will miss her both as a friend, and very competent manager of the 4th Largest Adult League in USA Hockey. We at GG wish Terri all the best. The one good thing with 2 children skating at GG and herself playing on a couple of adult teams, we will continue to see that big smile around the rink.
To continue what Terri has so efficiently developed, we have hired Seth Cardwell to continue where Terri has left off. Seth is a long time hockey player in GG. Seth played many years of youth hockey at GG playing for the Jr. Ice Dogs, then as he became a young adult he played for the Jr. A Long Beach Bombers that also play at GG. After taking a couple of years off playing adult league, Seth joined the Long Beach Bombers coaching staff where he now continues into his 2nd season. With Terri's help we interviewed several qualified individuals, and chose Seth to continue on with the program Terri has designed. Helping Seth will be Terri's assistant Anissa and Braden Grinstead handling the officials along with all of the competent score keepers. Seth will be working a rotating schedule that will allow him to work all nights / divisions so he can get to know all of you.
If you have spent any time standing around the rink the last few weeks you will notice a major change in the snack bar, new menu items and 'beer/wine". In addition, this past Friday night the Igloo Pub and Cafe has opened for business serving up to 8 tap beers, plus a collection of bottled beer and wines. Table service is available as well as a food menu for your pleasure. Over the next few weeks TV's will be added for watching the evenings choice of NHL games. The Igloo Pub will be a great place to relax after the game for a cold one and snack. The license for the Pub allows the on-site sale of beer and wine, and therefore none of the drinks can be taken from the building. Therefore the Pub seating / serving area is on the mezzanine area above Rink A/pro shop and beer and wine is also served from the snack bar.
With the opening of the Pub and adding beer/wine to the beverages sold within GG there are a couple of things that we need to ask your help with in making the changes work for everyone. Under California Law with a operating eating establishment that serves alcohol (beer/wine) it is a violation for GG to allow alcoholic beverages to be brought into the rink by customers, skaters, etc. Therefore, as much as it has always been against rink policy to allow smoking and alcohol use in the building it is now illegal to bring alcohol into the building. We would ask you to voluntarily honor the policy. Management has attended the necessary clinics through the California Alcoholic Commission and will be monitoring the exclusion of customers, skaters, etc., bring alcohol into the building. Likewise because the L. A. County Sheriff's Department approved the licensing of the Pub, they will be patrolling the parking lot more often and could issue citations for drinking outside the building in the parking lot.
The Pub will be offering specials and after game promotions for teams that play at GG.
GG is working with a tournament promoter to bring couple of tournaments for Adults to GG during 2012. Watch our web site for more information as it is available.
The Winter Season will begin in early December, therefore a Captains meeting will be held mid November. More news on that later this month.
Shortly, we will be offering special skating programs for the children of members of the Adult League. Discounts to our normal programs will be available.
For those that haven't come out to develop your skills at the adult clinic on Monday and Thrusday nights, come out and check it out. You will enjoy it as well as become a better player.
Lastly we have had a couple of unfortunate incidents involving suspensions of adult league players for multiple games as well as expulsion from the league. Our Goal at GG is to have a safe, recreational competitive, and most importantly a fun league to play in for your hockey experience. Overly aggressive players who display tactics that cross the line of sportsmanship, safety, etc. will be dealt with quickly as they have been in the last few weeks. Please remember at the end of the night, everyone on the ice should be saying what a great night it was for hockey.
Cordially,
Glacial Garden Skating Arena
